Welcome to Darien
Darien is a small, residential community of approximately 19,000 located in a lovely country area bordering Long Island Sound. Conveniently reached by both the Merritt Parkway and the Connecticut (I-95) Turnpike, it is also serviced by Metro North Railroad and is just a 55 minute commute to New York City. The community covers 14.9 square miles with zoning for 1/5 to 2 acres.
Located on the northern side of "The Sound", residents enjoy two town beaches, two boat clubs with docks and anchorage, tennis and paddle tennis facilities and an indoor ice skating rink. There are numerous clubs for golf, swimming, tennis and horseback riding for those who prefer the intimacy of orgsnizations. The Parks and Recreation Commission provides Summer Day Camp as well as a wide variety of seasonal activities. Residents also enjoy an annual art show, antique show and various community concerts.
The Darien school system is recognized as one of the best in the nation. There are five elementary schools, all K-5, one middle school and one Senior High School with approximately 85% of its students continuning on to higher educaion. Expenditure per pupil is also one of the highest in the country. Darien High School was a winner of the U.S. Department of Education's Secondary School Recognition Award. Special Education is available for the exceptional child, evaluation and therapy for the slow to learn and the hard of hearing, home instruction for the ill and an Alternate Learning Program that endeavors to keep possible dropouts from leaving school.
There are places of worship within easy driving distances. Three volunteer Fire Departments serve the town as well as a highly respected and alert Police Department. Darien will have a brand new expanded public library (currently under construction), two weekly newspapers, a major hotel and many fine resturants. Limousine service to metropolitan airports is available.
Active town organizations include the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball, Lassie League, Pop Warner Football, The Hockey Association, Figure Skating Club, Explorer Post medical assistance & emergency medical services, Indian Guides & Indian Princesses. The Newcomers Club covers a wide range of interests from gourmet groups to babysitting co-ops. The Darien Community Association sponsers many educational and chartable activites for residents of Darien and houses the Senior Citizen's 60 Plus Club. The Darien Arts Council is a multi-faceted volunteer organization providing an opportunity for residents to enjoy and participate in programs and events in music, dance, theater and the visual arts.
Darien's government is relatively simple in form. There are tree principle bodies - the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Finance and the Representative Town Meeting, which is a direct descendent of the New England Town Meeting. It is basically the legislative arm of the government. All Representative Town Meetings are open to the public and public comment is solicited, but only elected members may vote on matters brought before the assemblage.
